There is no correct or absolute guideline for choosing the "right" sized cigar. You choose what you like and feel the most
comfortable with. This decision will translate to a nice cigar-smoking event.
Therefore, get to know the various sizes and discover which one is right for you. Remember that the length of a cigar is measured in inches and the ring size, (girth), of a cigar is measured in 64ths of an inch.
Here are the more standard cigar sizes and shapes.
Corona - Traditional formats are 5.5 to 6.0 inches with a 42-44 ring gauge. Churchill - Basically a large corona. Dimensions hover around 7.0 inches in length by a 48 ring gauge. Robusto - A short Churchill. Usually 5.0 to 5.5 inches by a rather stout 50 ring gauge. Corona Gorde - Long robusto. Measures are 5.0 & 5/8's inches by a 46 ring gauge. Toro - A very popular size. This cigar is 6.0 x 50 in the classic state. Double Corona - Standard format is 7.5 to 8.0 inches by a 49 to 52 ring gauge. Panetala - Shaped akin to a longer, thinner corona. Varies from 5.0 to 7.5 inches with a 34 to 38 ring gauge. Lonsdale - Usually thicker than a panatela 6.75 inches by 42 to 44 ring gauge. Pyramid - Tapered close-headed cigar with a wider open foot. 6.0 to 7.0 inches in length. Head at 40 ring gauge, while the foot widens to 52 to 54 ring gauge. Belicoso - Sometimes referred to as a short pyramid. 5.0 to 5.5 inches. Ring gauge around 50 or less. Perfecto - Similier to a torpedo with a rounded head. 4.5 to 9.0 inches. Ring gauge between 38 and 48. Torpedo - Closed foot and a pointed head. Slight bulge in the middle. 4.75 to 7.0 inches. The ring gauge varies from 50 to 60. Culebra - A rather unusual shape is this one. This consists of three panatelas which are braided together and made to look like one twisted cigar. These are usually 5.0 to 6.0 inches in length with a ring gauge around 38. Just for the record...the cigars are designed to be seperated before smoking. Diademas - This is a big one! Usually 8.0 inches or longer. The head is closed and tapered. The ring gauge is 40 at the head, while the foot is a stocky 52 or larger. The point of this discussion is best summized by Dr. Ruth,"Experiment until you find the size you like best, and then buy it." |
